What Are Social Media Channels?

Saturday, May 16th, 2009

When participating in social media, there are many ‘channels’ that are available for you to use to spread your message and to connect with your customers.

A ‘channel’ is simply a method that you use as a business to promote yourself and could include any of the following:

  • Blogs
  • Videos (YouTube)
  • Wikis
  • Audio (podcasting)
  • Text Messaging (SMS)
  • Microblogging (Twitter)
  • Email
  • Social Networks (Facebook)
  • Photo Sharing (Flickr)
  • Local social networks (Trusteria)
  • etc.

Each of these channels allows you - and more importantly your customers - to post content that relates to your business in some fashion.

Social Media No No’s

Social Media No No'sFor all of the good that social media can do to help promote your business products and services, it can also harm them if you are not careful and do not take the time to learn about how to use each tool properly.

So what are some of the techniques to avoid when using social media?

Here is a good list:

  1. spamming - people don’t like spam email and they certainly will not like it if you are spamming them on Twitter or Facebook.    You are there to join the conversation, to listen and to become a recognized expert in your field and that takes time.  Don’t try to sell on the first day.
  2. too high expectations - this ties in with #1 that you cannot just jump in and start marketing your company right away, it will take time to build a good reputation online so don’t expect instantaneous results
  3. not wanting to hear the negative - online, people will be negative about you at some point and you are just going to have to deal with it, but you should also view it as an opportunity to fix an issue and turn that negative comment into a positive by working with that customer to turn their view point and their comments back toward helping your company.
  4. using a one size fits all approach - what works on Twitter will not work on Facebook and what works on Facebook will not work on LinkedIn - it is that simple.    Don’t try it because each medium serves a different purpose and a different audience.   We can help you research which social media platform(s) will serve your company best and advise you on which ones to avoid.
  5. posting at the wrong time - if you are going to post (especially something about your business), you should try to post just before lunch-time since most people will be using social media during their lunch hour.  Posting late at night is going make your audience much smaller - but do keep those ‘important’ posts to that mid-morning time frame to gain the largest audience.

Let me know if you have other problems that you believe should be added to the list.

See you online!

Why Social Media?

social-media-tallahasseeWhy Social Media?

Many Tallahassee business owners ask me the question, ‘Why should I be using social media?‘ and that is certainly a valid question.

Social media consists of much more than just having a Facebook fan page; it is a tool to promote yourself, your business and the products and services you offer.

More than that, social media is a tool that is made up of a number of tools (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Trusteria) that help you connect with your customers and provide ways to get feedback from them in a timely fashion.

Social media works as a marketing tool but before you begin, you should ensure that you have:

  • a web site that is well-designed and functions properly
  • a web site that has been optimized for search engines about the product and services that you offer
  • a web site that has been submitted to search engines and other online business directories

Once you have these three items out of the way, you are now ready to begin down the road of using social media to help your business efforts.

What Will Social Media Do For You?

Utilizing social media will provide your business:

  1. Links - part of any search engine optimization is obtaining links from as many sources as possible and you can utilize social media to provide some of those links.  If you provide good content and others ‘talk’ about your content and link to it, it makes that content even more valuable in the eyes of search engines.
  2. Sales - of course the whole point of utilizing marketing with social media is to get customers to purchase your products and services.   Understand that you may not (and probably will not) make direct sales using social media.  On the other hand, you should view it as a way to connect with your potential customers so when they are ready to buy, they purchase from you.
  3. Customer Service - using social media is a great way to provide customer service in a unique way.  Just the other day I saw a post about a local restaurant that went something like this: ‘Don’t ever eat at ***, I just left the drive thru and the service stunk, the food is cold and it tastes funny’.  Now, if that was your business, wouldn’t you like to know about that?  I sure would and connecting to your customers where they are is certainly going to help you provide better service to them.
  4. Branding - you can simply help raise awareness of your current products and services by simply being visible online using different social media platforms.
